That Decisive Photographic Moment

A while ago I wrote a post entitled ‘how to produce digital black and white photographs‘ and in it I mentioned that I was a big fan of the work by Henri cartier-bresson. He was a master of black and white photography and of capturing that decisive moment. The split second moment when a cyclist flies past a door way or when a distant figure hops across a puddle in the street.
In my photographic work I’m always trying to produce the best image I can and the photograph above is definitely one I am proud of. It is a portrait of my son and was taken a couple of years ago in a small tea room somewhere in the heart of Lancashire. I would like to say is was meticulously planned and executed but the truth is, it was the result of many shots taken that day. I love the expression on his face as he attacked the slice of toast with such vigor. I could not have replicated this shot again if I tried. A perfect example of how capturing that decisive moment can result in a very powerful image.
